Use A 16A 230V 2 Pin Euro Socket To Charge A Type 2 EV In Mainland Europe

This EV charger is also known as the Type 2 to Schuko charger and can be used to connect to a 2 pin Type F socket, which is the type commonly found in mainland Europe in countries such as France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the Netherlands.

The charger has adjustable current and 30ma AC + 6mA DC residual current detection, equivalent to to Type A RCD and Type B RCD fault protection. It is also suitable for EV’s that require a variable current charger, so the electric vehicle can reduce the current it receives when required.

The Type 2 to Schuko charger can plug into a Type F 16A socket and can charge at 8A, 10A, 13A and 16A. If you are using a 16A Euro socket to charge your EV for long periods, then there is the lower 8A and 10A current, which will cause less heat stress to the 16A socket.

Do not use an extension lead or adapter with this charger. Plug the charger directly into a 16A socket. Always avoid getting water in the plug or connector and keep the charger dry when not in use.

Is This 16A 230V 2 Pin Charger Suitable For My EV / PHEV?

Choosing The Right Charger

Charging an EV with a 16A socket may cause thermal damage if the socket overheats due to damaged or faulty wiring or if the electrical circuit is overloaded.

For this reason, we strongly recommend having an electrician inspect the intended socket for EV charging to certify its suitability. This assessment should encompass factors such as the set current (8A, 10A, 13A or 16A), charging duration (e.g., 4 hours at a time), and the frequency of EV charging (e.g., daily).

We understand that, at times, charging your EV with a socket certified by an electrician may not be feasible. In such instances, we recommend using the lower amp setting of 8A. It is also a good idea to ensure that both the plug and socket are not becoming excessively hot during the EV charging process.

Avoid using an extension lead or adapter with this Schuko charger. Plug the charger directly into the socket. Ensure that water does not come into contact with the prongs of the 3-pin plug or enters inside the Type 2 plug. Keep the charger dry when not in use. Before usage, be sure to read the user booklet included with the charger.

To use this Schuko charger, your EV must have a Type 2 socket. Refer to the photo of a Type 2 socket on this page and match it to your EV.

If you are still not sure, click the button below to find your EV/PHEV. This will enable you to verify if your vehicle is equipped with a Type 2 socket. Additionally, please review the information at the top of this page under “Please Read Before You Buy”. This information will help you to avoid the most common reasons for returning a 2-pin charging cable.

Do You Want A Charger With Multiple Adapters?

If you’re in search of a flexible EV charger compatible with various power sockets, then consider our multi-adapter charger. The charger supports charging from both 1 Phase and 3 Phase sockets, and provides a current range of 6A to 32A.

This charger allows connection to a variety of outlets. For instance, the 3 pin and 5 pin Commando sockets, the 13A mains socket, and the 16A Euro (Schuko) socket. You have the flexibility to choose the specific adapters you need for your charger.

Furthermore, it incorporates a charging timer, enabling charging to start anywhere from 1 to 10 hours after being plugged in. When using the 3 pin UK plug adapter, the charger will automatically select a safe 10A charging mode.

For a detailed breakdown of the maximum currents provided by the multi-adapter charger when used with different adapter/power outlets, refer to the table below:

Adapter & OutletMax kW
3 Phase CEE 32A22kW
3 Phase CEE 16A11kW
1 Phase CEE 32A7,4kW
1 Phase CEE 16A3,7kW
UK 13A 2,2kW
Schuko 16A3,7kW

The maximum current displayed in the above table will not necessarily align with the current that the EV/PHEV can accept. In other words, the vehicle can only accept up to the maximum current of its onboard charger (OBC).

EV Cable Bag And Case

We provide a canvas cable bag (suitable for cables up to 10M) to store this charger when not in use. The bag can also be upgraded to a cable carrier case made from EVA material, which has improved waterproof and impact protection. The EVA case has an elasticated strap in the bottom compartment and elasticated mesh pocket in the top to allow convenient storage of two cables. The EVA case can hold two cables, provided each cable is no longer than 10 meters (with a total combined length of 20 meters) and is neatly wound. You can replace the canvas cable bag with an EVA case by selecting the option available in the basket or on the checkout page.
